Widely regarded as one of the most versatile and expressive drummers of his generation, Gregory Hutchinson has been a driving force in modern jazz for over three decades. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Hutchinson grew up surrounded by rhythm and began playing drums at an early age, quickly gaining attention for his deep groove, refined touch, and boundless musicality.

Hutchinson’s career took off in the late 1980s when he joined Red Rodney and later became a core member of Betty Carter’s band — a legendary proving ground for young musicians. His mastery of swing and sensitivity soon led him to work with a long list of jazz icons, including Ray Brown, Joe Henderson, Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, John Scofield, Dianne Reeves, and Herbie Hancock.

A true musical polyglot, Hutchinson moves effortlessly between hard bop, post-bop, and contemporary styles, always maintaining a sound that is both grounded in tradition and forward-looking. His drumming combines the dynamic fire of Tony Williams, the finesse of Philly Joe Jones, and the elasticity of Jack DeJohnette — yet remains unmistakably his own.

Beyond his performances as a sideman and bandleader, Hutchinson is a respected educator and mentor, having inspired countless drummers around the world through his workshops, recordings and teaching. His playing can be heard on numerous acclaimed albums, contributing to the evolution of modern jazz rhythm.
